Ken Hernden BA (Hons.), MLIS (Western University) has served for the last nine years as University Librarian and University Archivist at Algoma University, which transitioned from an affiliate college of Laurentian University to an independent university in 2008. Previously, Ken served as Head of Reference, Audio-Visual and Systems at the North Bay (Ontario) Public Library, as Adjunct Archivist at the York University Archives (Toronto, Ont.), and as Librarian/Archivist at Rush University (Chicago, Ill.). He also served during all 2010 through 2012 as co-director of Algoma’s Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre as it professionalized and transitioned from a volunteer project to a university department.  Ken has been made co-director of the SRSC again beginning in 2016.

As University Librarian and University Archivist, Ken Hernden is responsible for the overall management and direction of all library operations. This includes but is not limited to budgeting, planning, staffing, training, supervising and delegating, and reporting on operations to the Administration, Board, and Senate. As a member of Administration, Ken has regularly contributed to the planning and development programs and services and the identification of needed financial and human resources at the university. He promotes library and archival services through planning and implementing multi-year strategies designed to increase visibility and use. Ken plays a role in fundraising and development by stewarding gifts and donations and planning and implementing multi-year strategies for fundraising and soliciting gifts and donations. Finally, as a member of the university’s Administration, he participates on the President's Council and in institutional decision making.

Externally, the University Librarian serves as a voting member on the boards of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network on behalf of the university.

Currently, Ken serves as the Vice-Chair of OCUL and Chair of the OCUL Planning & Assessment Standing Committee, as well as serving on the Algoma University Curriculum Committee, the Academic Support Committee, the Strategic Enrolment Mandate Committee, and the Senate.

Previously, Ken has served as Secretary to the OCUL Executive Committee and Vice-Chair of Knowledge Ontario and as a member of the Senate Executive at Algoma University.
